William Peters, M.Ed., MFT, is a licensed psychotherapist at the Family Therapy Institute in Santa Barbara, specializing in end-of-life counseling as a means toward psycho-spiritual evolution. He is author of At Heaven’s Door: What Shared Journeys to the Afterlife Teach About Dying Well and Living Better. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Shared Crossing Project where he and his research team collect and study extraordinary end-of-life experiences. His website is sharedcrossing.com.
He explains that shared death experiences (SDEs) have many of the same features as a near-death experience (NDE). However, in the SDE it is the living person who experiences what the dying person experiences. He describes that SDEs can occur physically at the bedside or remotely with four distinct ways that people experience them. After having an SDE, most people report that it lessens or removes their grief and fear of death and dying, they become more spiritual, and they are convinced that there is a benevolent afterlife.
