Ruth Kastner, PhD, is a member of the Foundations of Physics group at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is author of The Transactional Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics: The Reality of Possibility, Understanding Our Unseen Reality: Solving Quantum Riddles, and Adventures in Quantumland: Exploring Our Unseen Reality.

Here she contrasts the “eternalist” view of physics, as expressed in the idea of a “block universe” based on Einstein’s theory of relativity, with a “dynamical” view as expressed in the transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics. These interpretations of the physical universe both allow some form of human postmortem survival – although they appear to be quite different from each other.

Peter Fenwick, PhD, is coauthor with his wife, Elizabeth, of The Truth in the Light, The Art of Dying, The Hidden Door: Understanding and Controlling Your Dreams, and Past-Lives: An Investigation Into Reincarnation Memories. He is also author of Shining Light on Transcendence: The Unconventional Journey of a Neuroscientist. He is President Emeritus of the Scientific and Medical Network.

Here he describes his research in a variety of areas including epilepsy, near-death experience, deathbed experiences, and the dying process itself. He also describes unusual research on the process of “giving light” associated with a spiritual teacher named Alain Forget. Jeffrey interviews himself about the concept of the Akashic Field. He compares it to William James’ notion of a “cosmic reservoir” that contains all the information that ever existed. One might think of it as analogous to the internet in some ways. However, information is not necessarily conscious. Postmortem survival of human consciousness would require more than a field of information that can be accessed through the psychic functioning of living individuals.

Betty J. Kovács, PhD, taught symbolic/mythic language for twenty-five years. She has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Jung Society of Claremont, California, and sits on the Academic Advisory Board of Forever Family Foundation. Here she describes a very brief, yet important, episode in the history of esoteric culture. In Bohemia, during the early years of the seventeenth century, there existed for about twenty years a tolerant mixture of alchemists, kabbalists, muslim scholars, Catholics, hermeticists, protestants, philosophers, and troubadours. It was a continuation of humanity’s authentic, life-giving tradition. While it ended with the beginning of the Thirty Years War, it also was a seed for the German Romantic movement.

Bill Plotkin, PhD, is the founder of the Animas Valley Institute in Durango, CO. He is author of Soulcraft: Crossing Into the Mysteries of Nature and Psyche, Nature and the Human Soul: Cultivating Wholeness and Community in a Fragmented World, Wild Mind: A Field Guide to the Human Psyche, and The Journey of Soul Initiation: A Field Guide for Visionaries, Evolutionaries, and Revolutionaries.

Here he explains his use of the term “soul” as relating to an individual’s unique ecological niche in mythopoetic terms. He points out that soul initiation is not the same as a vision quest, a hero’s journey, psychotherapy, nor a rite of passage. It can be a very lengthy process involving a dissolution of the ego. He shares many details of the process, relating it to the biological transformation of a caterpillar to butterfly. He also describes Carl Gustav Jung’s soul initiation as documented in the Red Book.

Jeffrey interviews himself about the story of U Ba Kyar, a Burmese village head man who was kidnapped and murdered by insurgents in 1956. His reincarnation was foretold in a series of announcing dreams. The young child, Aung Than, who then claimed to be the reincarnation of U Ba Kyar was born with birth defects related to his memories (unverified) concerning the death of U Ba Kyar. Robert Ginsberg is the cofounder of the Forever Family Foundation. He is author of The Medium Explosion: A Guide to Navigating the World of Those Who Claim to Communicate with the Dead.

Here he describes how his journey of exploration began when his late wife, Phran, woke up early one morning in 2002 in a terrified state and pronounced with certainty that something absolutely horrible would happen that day. Zack Rogow is the author, editor, or translator of twenty books or plays. His most recent book of poems, Irreverent Litanies, was published by Regal House. Rogow’s other books of poetry include Talking with the Radio: poems inspired by jazz and popular music. His play Colette Uncensored (coauthored with Lorri Holt) had its first public reading at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC; was performed in Berkeley and in London. Rogow is the editor of an anthology of poetry of the U.S.A., The Face of Poetry, from University of California Press. He has also translated two books by André Breton, considered the “godfather of surrealism”, Arcanum 17 and Earthlight, which won the PEN/Book of the Month Club Award for translations. Here he discusses the history of surrealism as a movement influencing both painting and writing. Paradoxically, the surrealists emphasized the spontaneous productions of the unconscious and of coincidence or synchronicity. Yet, they developed a rather rigid social structure. They enjoyed playing games, and Zack shares some of his poetry expressing these games – as well as other poems from his recent book, Irreverent Litanies.

Here he distinguishes between “shamanic practitioners” such as himself and authentic shamans who work within very specific cultural traditions and are acknowledged as such by their community. As a psychologist, he incorporates drumming, chanting, and other trance and animistic practices, from various cultures, into his work and personal life. He points out that we all have shamanistic cultures in our ancestry if we go back far enough. This recognition can help us achieve greater balance in life.

Don Lattin, a former journalist, is author of Jesus Freaks: A True Story of Murder and Madness on the Evangelical Edge; Following Our Bliss: How the Spiritual Ideals of the Sixties Shape Our Lives Today; The Harvard Psychedelic Club: How Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Huston Smith, and Andrew Weil Killed the Fifties and Ushered in a New Age for America; Changing Our Minds: Psychedelic Sacraments and the New Psychotherapy; and Distilled Spirits: Getting High, and then Sober, with a Famous Writer, a Forgotten Philosopher, and a Hopeless Drunk.

Here he describes the extraordinary friendship of three seminal figures: Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World and The Doors of Perception; Gerald Heard, author of The Five Ages of Man; and Bill Wilson, founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. In the early 1950s, these individuals were among the first to explore the potential of psychedelic drugs (mescaline, psilocybin, and LSD) as a tool for spiritual and psychological breakthroughs.
