Understanding Hylozoism with Thomas Brophy

Thomas Brophy, PhD, is president of the California Institute of Human Science. He also serves as president of the Society for Consciousness Studies. He is author of The Mechanism Demands a Mysticism: An Exploration of Spirit, Matter and Physics (see https://amzn.to/3abDkGz) as well as The Origin Map: Discovery of a Prehistoric, Megalithic, Astrophysical Map and Sculpture of the Universe (see https://amzn.to/30hM9tH). He has also coauthored, two books with Robert Bauval titled Black Genesis: The Prehistoric Origins of Ancient Egypt (see https://amzn.to/2Rhh1qb) and Imhotep the African: Architect of the Cosmos (see https://amzn.to/38721SD). His websites are https://www.cihs.edu/ and https://consc.org/.

Here he points out that hylozoism is a worldview that postulates the entire universe is, in some sense, alive. He contrasts it with terms hylostochastic and hylostatic — that the universe is probabilistic or that it is deterministic. He suggests that this worldview enables one to formulate scientific questions — related, for example, to parapsychology — that are considered unacceptable by many scientists.

The Need for Novel Folklore in an Iranian Renaissance with Jason Reza Jorjani

Jason Reza Jorjani, PhD, is a philosopher and author of Prometheus and Atlas, World State of Emergency, Lovers of Sophia, Novel Folklore: The Blind Owl of Sadegh Hedayat, and Iranian Leviathan: A Monumental History of Mithra’s Abode.

Here he explains what “novel folklore” is and why it is needed in any authentic renaissance movement. Sadegh Hedayat has sometimes been mischaracterized as an advocate for the restoration of Zoroastrianism in Iran. This discussion of Jorjani’s exegesis of Hedayat’s classic, dark novel, The Blind Owl, reveals the much more complex vision that Hedayat had for the evolution of Iranian civilization. The discussion treats questions such as reincarnation, taboos, and social customs.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness exploration.

Paranormal Experiences in Psychotherapy with Paul J. Leslie

Paul J. Leslie, EdD, is a psychotherapist in private practice in Aiken, South Carolina. He is professor of psychology at Aiken College. He is author of The Art of Creating a Magical Session: Key Elements for Transformative Psychotherapy, Low Country Shamanism: An Exploration of the Magical and Healing Practices of the Coastal Carolinas and Georgia, Potential Not Pathology: Helping Your Clients Transform Using Ericksonian Psychotherapy, and Shadows in the Session: The Presence of the Anomalous in Psychotherapy.

Here he describes the difficulty felt by many psychotherapists and their clients in engaging in conversations regarding paranormal experiences. Much of this is due to the fact that such experiences are also considered a symptom of psychosis and may require medication. The problem is pronounced when therapists have their own paranormal experiences within a therapy session. He shares one such extraordinary experience of his own; and reports on accounts presented by other therapists.

Andy Hilton is author of Anthropology and Mysticism in the Making of Initiation. He is also coeditor of the anthology, Perspectives on Commoning.

Here he discusses the history of anthropological investigations into tribal processes involving rites of passage, liminality, and rebirth. He also discusses his own experience of cosmic consciousness while attending a shamanic workshop. This was part of a larger initiatory process lasting nine months. As a consequence he has spent the past thirty years developing his ideas for a sub-discipline called “initiation studies”.

Indian Thought with Kiran Kumar Salagame

Kiran Kuman Salagame, PhD, is former chairman of the psychology department at the University of Mysore, India. He is also vice-president of the International Transpersonal Association. He is author of The Psychology of Meditation: A Contextual Approach.

Here he describes how Indian thought is a fusion of many influences — primarily Vedantist, Buddhist, and Jain. However, going back to ancient times, there were always materialists in the mix. Additionally, there is the influence of the prehistoric Indus Valley culture — whose language has yet to be deciphered fully. There is also a tension between the spiritual ascetics who withdrew from worldly activities and those spiritual practitioners who wished to have an impact in the material world. Above all, Indian thought is focused on processes of transcendence.

Mysticism with James Tunney

James Tunney, LLM, is an Irish Barrister who has lectured on legal matters throughout the world. In addition, he has written two dystopian novels — Blue Lies September, and Ireland I Don’t Recognize Who She Is. His website is http://www.jamestunney.com.

Here he describes mysticism as a quest for understanding the meaning of life and the nature of the true self. He agrees with the Perennial Philosophy tradition that the core of mysticism is, essentially, the same in all cultures. He maintains that all mystics understand that they are spiritual beings and that this awareness unites people of all cultures. He sees scientism as a cultural force that is antagonistic to mysticism.

Phenomena of High Strangeness with Barry Taff

Barry E. Taff holds a doctorate in psychophysiology with a minor in biomedical engineering. He worked at UCLA’s former parapsychology laboratory from 1969 through 1978. He also was investigated as a psychic subject, the results of which were published in Behavioral Neuropsychiatry. He is author of Aliens Above, Ghosts Below: Explorations of the Unknown. His website is www.BarryTaff.net.

Here he shares some personal experiences with apports, ostensible disembodied entities, and bilocation. Such phenomena are so rare and apparently impossible that most individuals simply deny them outright, even when witnessed. Yet they are consistent with the personal accounts of several guests on the New Thinking Allowed channel.
