Mind and Matter with Russell Targ

Russell Targ, a laser physicist, cofounded the remote viewing research program at SRI International. He is coauthor of Mind Reach, The Mind Race, Miracles of Mind, The Heart of the Mind, and The End of Suffering. He is author of Limitless Mind and The Reality of ESP: A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities. He is also coeditor of the anthology, Mind At Large.

Here he shares his personal involvement with Advaita Vedanta, a philosophy that maintains that there are no divisions. He reviews the impact of logical positivism and describes himself as a former positivist. Then he describes several examples of parapsychological phenomena he has observed. The implications of such observations is that mind or consciousness is efficacious in the world. He relates two personal stories suggesting survival of consciousness after death.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is past-vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that association for his contributions to the study of consciousness.

History of Ideas About The Paranormal with Terje Simonsen

Terje Simonsen, PhD, is the author of Our Secret Powers — Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Precognition — A Short History of (Nearly) Everything Paranormal. He is a philosopher and historian of ideas.

Here he reflects on ideas about the paranormal going back to ancient times. Topics include shamanism, Hermeticism, idealism, naturalism, materialism, and skepticism. He notes that, while there is nearly 150 years of scientific research in parapsychology, the field is still marginalized within academia. He also discusses the responses to the paranormal within the field of theoretical physics. He focuses on the practical applications of psi, and on the personal meaning of psi abilities.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities. He holds a doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” from the University of California, Berkeley.

Star Gate Revisited with Edwin C. May

Edwin C. May, PhD, was involved in the military intelligence psychic spying program, popularly referred to as Stargate, for over twenty years. During the last decade, he was the director of research for that program. In this context, he produced over a hundred scientific publications. His academic training was in experimental nuclear physics. He is coauthor of ESP Wars: East and West and also Anomalous Cognition: Remote Viewing Research and Theory. He is the coeditor of a two-volume anthology titled Extrasensory Perception: Support, Skepticism, and Science. He is also co-editor of the four-volume anthology, Star Gate Archives. His website is https://www.lfr.org/.

Here he reviews his involvement with government sponsored research into the application of remote viewing for intelligence gathering purposes. He describes his relationship with Ingo Swann who is credited as the “inventor” of remote viewing. He discusses the organizational structure and scientific oversight of the program. He focuses on his subsequent contacts with Russian officials who were also engaging in remote viewing. He describes his skepticism regarding psychokinesis applications in the military.

The Gnostics with Jason Reza Jorjani

Jason Reza Jorjani, PhD, is a philosopher and author of Prometheus and Atlas, World State of Emergency, Lovers of Sophia, and Novel Folklore: The Blind Owl of Sadegh Hedayat.

Here he points out that, while the term Gnosticism is very popular, few people really understand what it means. While it is a very loose religious movement, it does have certain common elements. Among these are the idea that our world is under the sway of a malevolent deity who is served by powers and principalities. He traces Gnostic movements such as Manicheism, Mazdakism, and the Cathars. He also discusses the rebirth of Gnosticism in our age, due to the rediscovery of the Nag Hammadi library.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness exploration.

The Psychic Seventies with Saul-Paul Sirag

Saul-Paul Sirag is author of ADEX Theory: How the ADE Coxeter Graphs Unify Mathematics and Physics. He is also author of an Appendix titled “Consciousness: A Hyperspace View” that was published in the 1993 edition of Jeffrey Mishlove’s book, The Roots of Consciousness.

Here he and Jeff reflect on their time together almost a half-century ago. Their memories include time exploring UFO phenomena, interacting with the famous Israeli psychic, Uri Geller, and living at the Institute for the Study of Consciousness in Berkeley, California. It was also a time of great ferment in the world of physics at Berkeley. Both Saul-Paul (mostly) and Jeff (slightly) were written about in historian of science David Kaiser’s book How the Hippies Saved Physics. The conversation also focuses on Jungian synchronicities.

Understanding DMT with David Luke

David Luke, PhD, is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich. He is editor of the anthology, DMT Dialogues: Encounters with the Spirit Molecule, and author of Otherworlds: Psychedelics and Exceptional Human Experience.

Here he points out that DMT is a natural substance found in most plants and animals (with the exception of fungi and insects). It produces a very powerful psychedelic experience, although the major effects may last only ten minutes. Most users experience communication with what appear to be sentient spiritual entities. Often they have a cartoonish appearance. Luke explores the various metaphysical interpretations that have been offered regarding these ostensible entities.

The Life And Work of Rudolf Steiner with Gary Lachman

Gary Lachman is the author of twenty-one books on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. He has written a rock and roll memoir of the 1970s, biographies of Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner, C. G. Jung, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Emanuel Swedenborg, P. D. Ouspensky, and Colin Wilson, histories of Hermeticism and the Western Inner Tradition, studies in existentialism and the philosophy of consciousness, and about the influence of esotericism on politics and society.

Here he describes Rudolf Steiner’s early work editing the scientific writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as well as his subsequent encounter with the work of Friedrich Nietzsche. Steiner was known as a polymath and lecturer on many topics. Eventually, he was selected to become the head of the German branch of the Theosophical Society. Later, he left Theosophy and formed the Anthroposophical Society — leading to an enormous burst of creative activity in education, agriculture, architecture, art, theatre, sculpture, and body movement.

The Existence of Spiritual Entities with Jorge Ferrer

Jorge Ferrer, PhD, is former chair of the department of east-west psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is currently a core faculty member there. He is author of Revisioning Transpersonal Theory: A Participatory Vision of Human Spirituality, and Participation and the Mystery: Transpersonal Essays in Psychology, Education, and Religion. He is the coeditor of an anthology titled, The Participatory Turn: Spirituality, Mysticism, and Religious Studies. He is known as a leading proponent of the “second wave” of transpersonal theorists.

Here he notes that many people have reported contacts with spiritual entities of both a positive and negative nature. He describes several of his own experiences. He also acknowledges the difficulty in determining if these experiences involve autonomous entities, independent of his own consciousness. He advocates a post-colonial research approach in which scientists will work together as equals with indigenous shamans and other experiencers.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. Investigating Psychic Surgery with James McClenon

James McClenon, PhD has been a sociology professor and licensed clinical social worker. He is author of Deviant Science: The Case of Parapsychology, Wondrous Events: Foundations of Religious Belief, Wondrous Healing: Shamanism, Human Evolution and the Origin of Relgion, and The Entity Letters: A Sociologist on the Trail of a Supernatural Mystery.

Here he explains that he has observed more than 1,000 instances of psychic surgery in the Philippines. He has also collected stories from the healers, themselves, regarding the conditions that led them to pursue a calling as a healer. He noted that many people believe themselves to have been healed through psychic surgery. Ultimately, however, he has seen no evidence that these ostensible surgeries are evidential of psychokinesis. Toward the end, he and Jeff engage in a conversation about replicability in parapsychology.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. Future Psychenauts with Charles T. Tart

Charles T. Tart, PhD, is emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, as well as the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is a past-president of the Parapsychological Association. He has published over 100 scientific papers in parapsychology. He is editor of several anthologies including Altered States of Consciousness, Transpersonal Psychologies, Mind at Large, and Body Mind Spirit: Exploring the Parapsychology of Spirituality. Books that he has authored include Psi: Scientific Studies in the Psychic Realm, States of Consciousness, The End of Materialism, Learning to Use Extrasensory Perception, On Being Stoned, Waking Up: Overcoming the Obstacles to Human Potential, and Open Mind – Discriminating Mind.

Here he reflects upon his classic article, published in Science in 1972, on “states of consciousness and state-specific science”. His ambition, not yet realized, is to inaugurate a new approach to science in which researchers would enter into altered states of consciousness. He examines the obstacles to realization of this novel objective — particularly the human tendency to cling to ideologies. The discussion includes meditation, hypnosis, dreams, and the use of psychedelic drugs.

Psychic Transference with Mona Delfino

Mona Delfino is author of The Sacred Language of The Human Body. She is a healer based in Eugene, Oregon. She is also a former nurse and former massage therapist.

Here she describes an extraordinary example of psychic transference that occurred at the start of her practice as a massage therapist. She points out that this phenomenon is well-known among healing practitioners. It also occurs in everyone’s life with every human encounter. We are constantly sending and receiving subconscious information and impulses. The key in addressing this issue is, first, to recognize it and, second, to process the experience without judgment.

Physics and Consciousness with Saul-Paul Sirag

Saul-Paul Sirag is author of ADEX Theory: How the ADE Coxeter Graphs Unify Mathematics and Physics. He is also author of an Appendix titled “Consciousness: A Hyperspace View” that was published in the 1993 edition of Jeffrey Mishlove’s book, The Roots of Consciousness.

Here he points out that the original founders of quantum theory in physics generally believed that consciousness literally causes the collapse of the wave function. This is the standard, Copenhagen interpretation. He goes on to explore the Einstein Podolsky Rosen paradox, and Einstein’s objection to quantum theory, as well as Bell’s Theorem. Subsequent experiments by John Clauser and others proved Einstein to be wrong. Sirag’s own work relates to hyperspace and the mathematical underpinnings of string theory.
