Paul H. Smith, PhD, has served twice as president of the International Remote Viewing Association an organization of which he is a founder. A former Army intelligence officer, he served for seven years as part of the military’s top-secret remote viewing program. Jeffrey John Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Philosophy and Religious Thought and former chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His books include Kali’s Child, Esalen, Authors of the Impossible, The Serpent’s Gift, Mutants and Mystics, The Supernatural (with Whitley Strieber), and Secret Body.

Here he describes his intellectual journey starting with the study of eroticism in religion and leading him into the study and appreciation of the esoteric or paranormal. His early research focused on homoeroticism in the life of the nineteenth century Hindu saint, Ramakrishna. In India, he experienced a profound state of consciousness associated with the goddess Kali. Later he worked with Whitley Strieber, a UFO contactee, and describes a striking correspondence between Strieber’s experience of the Visitors — and his understanding of Hindu goddesses.

Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, and The Idea of the World. He has published several papers in Scientific American arguing for metaphysical idealism.

Here he explains his own nuanced brand of philosophical idealism. He claims that the logical contradictions ensuing from materialism can all be resolved. Russell Targ, a laser physicist, cofounded the remote viewing research program at SRI International. Edwin C. May, PhD, was involved in the military intelligence psychic spying program, popularly referred to as Stargate, for over twenty years. David Luke, PhD, is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich. He is editor of the anthology, DMT Dialogues: Encounters with the Spirit Molecule, and author of Otherworlds: Psychedelics and Exceptional Human Experience.

Here he points out that DMT is a natural substance found in most plants and animals (with the exception of fungi and insects). It produces a very powerful psychedelic experience, although the major effects may last only ten minutes. Most users experience communication with what appear to be sentient spiritual entities. Here he describes Rudolf Steiner’s early work editing the scientific writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as well as his subsequent encounter with the work of Friedrich Nietzsche. Steiner was known as a polymath and lecturer on many topics. Eventually, he was selected to become the head of the German branch of the Theosophical Society. Later, he left Theosophy and formed the Anthroposophical Society — leading to an enormous burst of creative activity in education, agriculture, architecture, art, theatre, sculpture, and body movement.

Jorge Ferrer, PhD, is former chair of the department of east-west psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is currently a core faculty member there. James McClenon, PhD has been a sociology professor and licensed clinical social worker. He is author of Deviant Science: The Case of Parapsychology, Wondrous Events: Foundations of Religious Belief, Wondrous Healing: Shamanism, Human Evolution and the Origin of Relgion, and The Entity Letters: A Sociologist on the Trail of a Supernatural Mystery.

Here he explains that he has observed more than 1,000 instances of psychic surgery in the Philippines. He has also collected stories from the healers, themselves, regarding the conditions that led them to pursue a calling as a healer. He noted that many people believe themselves to have been healed through psychic surgery. Ultimately, however, he has seen no evidence that these ostensible surgeries are evidential of psychokinesis. Charles T. Tart, PhD, is emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, as well as the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is a past-president of the Parapsychological Association. He has published over 100 scientific papers in parapsychology. Here he reflects upon his classic article, published in Science in 1972, on “states of consciousness and state-specific science”. His ambition, not yet realized, is to inaugurate a new approach to science in which researchers would enter into altered states of consciousness. He examines the obstacles to realization of this novel objective — particularly the human tendency to cling to ideologies. Mona Delfino is author of The Sacred Language of The Human Body. She is a healer based in Eugene, Oregon. She is also a former nurse and former massage therapist.

Here she describes an extraordinary example of psychic transference that occurred at the start of her practice as a massage therapist. She points out that this phenomenon is well-known among healing practitioners. It also occurs in everyone’s life with every human encounter. We are constantly sending and receiving subconscious information and impulses. The key in addressing this issue is, first, to recognize it and, second, to process the experience without judgment.

Saul-Paul Sirag is author of ADEX Theory: How the ADE Coxeter Graphs Unify Mathematics and Physics. He is also author of an Appendix titled “Consciousness: A Hyperspace View” that was published in the 1993 edition of Jeffrey Mishlove’s book, The Roots of Consciousness.

Here he points out that the original founders of quantum theory in physics generally believed that consciousness literally causes the collapse of the wave function. This is the standard, Copenhagen interpretation. He goes on to explore the Einstein Podolsky Rosen paradox, and Einstein’s objection to quantum theory, as well as Bell’s Theorem. Subsequent experiments by John Clauser and others proved Einstein to be wrong. Sirag’s own work relates to hyperspace and the mathematical underpinnings of string theory.

Stephan A. Schwartz is a Distinguished Consulting Faculty of Saybrook University. He is the columnist for the journal Explore, and editor of the daily web publication Schwartzreport.net in both of which he covers trends that are affecting the future. His other academic and research appointments include: Senior Fellow for Brain, Mind and Healing of the Samueli Institute; founder and Research Director of the Mobius laboratory. Government appointments include Special Assistant for Research and Analysis to the Chief of Naval Operations. Schwartz was the principal researcher studying the use of Remote Viewing in archaeology. Here Schwartz and Mishlove examine why parapsychology has yet to achieve its potential as a discipline that could revolutionize both science and society. Jason Reza Jorjani is a philosopher and faculty member at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is author of Prometheus and Atlas, World State of Emergency, and Lovers of Sophia.

Here he describes Martin Heidegger’s 1927 classic book that served as a forerunner for both existentialism and post-modernism in philosophy. He notes that human existence is radically historical. He also describes three unique approach to human history: antiquarian, critical, and monumental. Heidegger felt that the monumental approach, which looked toward the future while appreciating the contributions of the past, was the most authentic. Jorjani suggests that Zionism is an example of this approach.

His research involved training ESP using an automated system, involving forced choices with feedback. Subjects were pre-screened for ESP ability. As predicted, ESP scores did not decline. Tart then shifted to research on remote viewing, in which a single trial may take an entire half-day. Remote viewing subjects routinely receive feedback; and decline effects have not been reported among remote viewers. Tart also describes the difficulties of conducting psi research in a college setting with student subjects.

Jeffrey also shares, in some detail, an event that permanently changed his life in 1972. He emphasizes the linguistic connection between the words “god” and “good” in reference to the application of mystical and psychic abilities.
